How to choose climbing pants for summer?

When the weather gets warmer, climbing doesn’t stop. Quite the opposite: long days, good weather and dry conditions make summer one of the best times of the year to head outdoors and climb on rock or enjoy an outdoor climbing wall.

But it’s also the season when we demand the most from our clothing. That’s why choosing the right climbing trousers for summer can make the difference between a comfortable session and an exhausting day in the heat.

In this article, we’ll give you some useful tips on what to look for when choosing men's climbing trousers and women's climbing trousers during the hottest months of the year.

Prioritise breathability

Sweat and heat are unavoidable in summer, especially on long routes or during intense bouldering sessions. Choosing a breathable fabric with good moisture-wicking properties is essential to avoid discomfort or chafing.

Look for trousers made from natural fibres such as organic cotton or Tencel, combined with technical materials that promote airflow.

 Lightweight above all

The lighter, the better.  Lightweight climbing trousers allow you to move more freely without feeling restricted or overheated. Dense or heavy fabrics that work well in winter can quickly become a burden under the summer sun.

That said, make sure that lightness doesn’t compromise durability, especially if you climb on abrasive rock.

Freedom of movement is key

Summer means long routes, overhangs and dynamic moves… and you need your clothing to move with you without restrictions.  Stretch fabric (ideally bi-stretch) and ergonomic cuts around the crotch or knees are important details that are often overlooked.

Whether short or long, stretchy trousers will give you greater freedom of movement and let you focus less on whether your clothing can handle your next heel hook.

Sustainability and durability

More and more climbers are paying attention to where their clothing comes from. If you practise a sport that is so closely connected to nature, why not choose clothing that has been made responsibly?

Opt for locally made garments, environmentally responsible production processes and recycled or low-impact materials.

Short or long?

It depends on your climbing style, the area and the type of route.  Climbing shorts are ideal for bouldering or sport climbing in warm areas, while lightweight long climbing trousers offer more protection in cracks, traditional routes or areas with dense vegetation.

The most important thing is to choose the option that makes you feel comfortable, free and confident with every movement.

Choosing the right climbing trousers for summer is not just a matter of style: it is a technical decision that can affect your performance, comfort and overall climbing experience.
  • Breathable.
  • Lightweight.
  • Stretchy.
  • Responsibly made.

Once you find that balance, there’s only one thing left to do: climb.
