Lara Neumeier and Rhapsody: the first woman to climb an E11

On 7 October 2026, exactly twenty years after Dave MacLeod first climbed it, Germany's Lara Neumeier sent Rhapsody at Dumbarton Rock (Scotland). It is the first female ascent of the route widely regarded as the world's first E11. Here is what makes it so special and what those of us who climb at a far more human height can learn from it.

What Rhapsody is and why it looms so large

Rhapsody is a traditional climbing route of about 35 metres, in a single pitch, on the north-west face of Dumbarton Rock, a basalt crag. Dave MacLeod climbed it free on 9 April 2006 and graded it E11 7a, roughly equivalent to 8c+ (5.14c).

The British system combines two things in one grade: the overall risk of the route (E11) and the technical difficulty of the hardest move (7a). On Rhapsody, both weigh heavily:

  • The crack is so thin that it only takes the smallest nuts on the market.
  • The final section offers almost no additional protection.
  • A fall near the top means a long swing of around 20 to 25 metres into the rock.
  • MacLeod fell nine times on the crux during his project.

It is no coincidence that it is described as one of the most dangerous routes in the world. Before Neumeier, it had been repeated by names such as Sonnie Trotter, Steve McClure, James Pearson and Jacopo Larcher.

How Neumeier did it

According to Gripped, she needed around 16 days of work spread over two trips: one in April and another in late September. She spent much of that time studying the moves and gear placements on a rope fixed from above, and only then moved on to leading attempts.

On the day of the ascent she warmed up on toprope and made a single lead attempt. It was not easy: a wet section of the lower crack nearly made her slip. She has said she put more energy and determination into this route than into any other, and that it reminded her how important it is to trust yourself.

She arrived with a solid track record: in 2025 she had climbed Psychogramm (5.14a) at Bürser Platte (Austria). And the day was historic twice over: according to Gripped, Buster Martin had sent it a few days earlier, and Austria's Nemuel Feurle completed it just hours after her.

Three ideas to take to the crag

1. The process matters more than the grade

Sixteen days of work for a single successful attempt. It is rare to see so clearly that a great send is built from patience, repetition and rest days.

2. Prepare the risk before you take it

Studying the route on a rope from above, knowing every placement and warming up properly before leading is an extreme version of something that applies to everyone: reduce the unknown before you commit. To look after your body, see our guide on how to avoid climbing injuries.

3. Self-belief can be trained

Confidence does not arrive all at once: it builds with every attempt. If you are just starting out, take a look at our tips for beginner climbers and remember that you do not need an E11 to feel the same thrill on your first route.

From Dumbarton to your crag: clothing that lets you move

Rhapsody is not climbed in special trousers, but anyone who has spent hours on rock knows that freedom of movement and comfort count, whether on a 5.14c or at your local crag. That is the idea behind our trousers, designed and finished in Spain:

  • Turia (men): stretch climbing and trekking jeans with reinforced knees, made for the rock and for everyday life.
  • Dena (women): stretch skinny climbing and trekking jeans offering protection, comfort and freedom of movement.
