Tips for beginner climbers
You were probably fascinated by a climbing wall at a party when you were a child. After all these years, you may have remembered those good times and want to experience that excitement again, taking it beyond something you once did just for fun.

However, there are several things you should consider before getting started. That is why we decided to put together this article with some useful tips for beginner climbers.
10 tips for beginner climbers
1. Go to a climbing gym
Climbing indoors is easy and safe, making it an excellent way to try the sport and find out what it is all about. You can rent equipment, take lessons and learn basic climbing skills. When you go to a climbing gym, watch experienced climbers and learn from their experience.

2. Learn the terminology
Climbing shoes have smooth soles made from extremely sticky rubber. A harness is worn around a climber’s legs and waist and includes attachment points that connect to a rope. A belay device is a metal device used to help prevent a climber from falling: one climber controls the rope for the other while they ascend. It is also used for rappelling, a controlled descent down the rope. A carabiner is a metal connector that attaches the rope to the harness.
3. Improve your movements and skills
Before heading out onto real rock, you should work on improving your climbing movements and skills. You could even consider building your own climbing wall, allowing you to boulder or climb at low heights and practise your technique.

4. Be aware that climbing is a dangerous sport
Once you feel ready to climb outdoors, remember that climbing is a dangerous sport. Advanced skills on an indoor climbing wall do not necessarily prepare you for a safe experience on real rock.
5. Go with experienced climbers
To make your experience as safe as possible, go with experienced climbers. You can also hire a guide or take outdoor climbing lessons.

6. Learn how to tie and check your knots
Even if you are climbing with a group of experienced climbers, do not leave your safety entirely in their hands. Take responsibility for yourself. Learn how to tie and check your knots, tie yourself into the rope correctly and inspect your harness.
7. Remember that climbing is not just about your arms
It is important to remember that climbing does not only involve your arms. You should also use your legs and feet to push yourself upwards instead of relying solely on your arms to pull yourself up.
8. Don’t let a fear of heights stop you from climbing
Many people focus on their fear of heights and fear of falling, but these are basic human fears that help keep us safe.
9. Learn to trust the person holding the rope
It is impossible to climb confidently if you do not fully trust the person belaying you.
10. Buy quality equipment
If you enjoy climbing, invest in suitable equipment. When you are starting out, however, you can rent the essentials: a harness, a helmet, one or two carabiners and a belay or rappelling device. These are some of your personal climbing tools. You will also need an appropriate pair of shoes. Climbing shoes mould to your feet and provide much better grip than other types of rubber-soled footwear.
