What features should climbing pants have?

Climbers, whether professionals or enthusiasts, need to feel comfortable when practising this sport. That is why the features of the trousers they wear for climbing are so important, as they need to provide the necessary freedom of movement, resistance to tears and damage, as well as breathability and practical technical details designed for this sport.

What should a good pair of climbing trousers have?

These are some of the aspects you should consider before buying men's climbing trousers or women's climbing trousers

The fabric or raw material used to make the garment is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing suitable trousers for climbing.

It is particularly important to look for trousers that combine stretch, durability, lightness and breathability.

Stretch fabric is important to provide climbers with freedom of movement. The image below shows just how necessary elasticity and comfort are in order to perform climbing movements properly. An ergonomic design is also very important, meaning that the garment should adapt to the body, prioritising the functionality of the cut over aesthetics. This can be achieved, for example, through pre-shaped knees, elastic waistbands or by combining different fabrics in different areas of the garment according to their specific requirements.

As well as being stretchy, the fabric should also be resistant in order to offer greater protection to the climber, especially in areas exposed to more friction, helping to prevent tears and damage.

For example, when combed cotton yarns are used in the fabric, they provide higher quality than carded yarns because they offer greater durability and a softer feel. This is reflected in both the fabrics and the finished garments, giving them greater longevity and a higher-quality finish.

The trousers should also be lightweight and breathable so that their weight does not interfere with your movements and so that your body can stay cool by allowing body heat to escape.

If the fabric itself is not particularly resistant, it is also advisable for the trousers to have at least reinforced knees.

Technical details often make the difference between conventional trousers and trousers specifically designed for climbing. In long climbing trousers, for example, it is particularly useful to have adjustable hems with an elastic drawcord. This allows you to stay comfortable throughout the day and adjust them while climbing.

All purpose-designed climbing trousers should include climbing brush holders for both right- and left-handed users, as well as a rear loop for attaching a chalk bag.

Finally, another useful feature for improving freedom of movement is an adjustable ergonomic waistband that is also elastic, helping to maximise comfort.
